Has anyone ever used/owned a Toyota Forklift? My dad is thinking of buying a used one for his automotive repair shop(yes it is a Toyota/Lexus shop) and they seem to be quite affordable. Any ideas? 2000GT for your time.

I ran a few when I worked for Home Depot and I thought they were awesome

How would you compare them to other brands? Theres a few that are used but a paint job and some brand stickers would make it look nice.

What would you use it for? If it’s just light use I’d just get whatever’s cheapest. My dad has an old Caterpillar that we use when we need to change a load due to a mechanical problem on a trailer maybe twice a year.

I’m hardly an expert. But I’ve worked at 16 different Home Depot locations and hardly any store had a standardization of equipment. I’ve driven Yale, Crown, Mitsubishi and Toyota forklifts. I may be biased because a few of the Depots I worked at had the Toyota. And it was the “big Toyota”. And maybe that’s why I liked it best. Because it was a monster. I would also say that the controls (while not varying a lot across brands) were the most responsive and intuitive with the Toyota.

Taking engines out of cars, moving larger loads around, storage room, my dad even joked about putting a snow plow on it. It wouldnt be used like it would be in a warehouse but maybe every week or two.

That might be too big for u even though it would be fun. It would just be for around the shop.

Cruiser outfitters has one in their tiny shop, they aren’t too big.

I guess the smallest one you can find. For your occasional use/ not really using it for long when you do use it just get whatever is cheapest/ will fit in the shop. Power, control sensitivity, comfort and looks really don’t mean that much in your situation.

I will say that our Cat works and that’s about it. Kinda fun to drive, easy to tip. But that’s all forklifts.

I found this pic on Google. This forklift is a BEAST. It was my favorite to operate.

The problem is space is tighter with our shop. 10 bays but close together.

Im soooo far away. Darn. We’re pretty much the go to FJ place in Tennessee. We haven’t done as much aftermarket but as far as fixing them everyone loves us. We have done drum to disc swap which are fun.

Use one here. No idea on the specs but it's been great over the time we've had it.

I’ve got a lot of seat time on the electric Toyota forklifts of a former employer. What do you want to know? They were easy to run, quite reliable, and low maintenance, as one would expect from a Toyota.

Oblig:

I have a 1999 5,000lb model....a pretty standard model that you see all over the place. I have a pretty demanding application and I haven’t had any major issues. However, I have been told that 1999 and previous had some gremlins in their engines. Ours has a hard time in colder weather. We have to choke it and let it warm up for a while. No amount of tinkering by the Toyota tech has helped. But otherwise it has been solid. Just get the newest model you can afford.

This is the right answer. If you live on it all day, ergos and controls are a huge deal. If you use it a couple times a week, cheap is the best. I’ve used all sorts of units, from 1/2 to 12 ton lifters, and I liked or disliked them because of ergos, since I was on them all day. But to hop on one for ten minutes at a time- they all do the job.

I've driven various machines by Crown, Hyster, and Toyota over the years and Toyotas tend to appear as if they hold up better. I don't know if they're actually of better quality or if people just treat them more gingerly, but they have been my favorite the few times I have operated them. Hysters are great but they seem, to me anyway, to show their age at a faster pace.

Did some digging on these, the engine is out of a Land Cruiser... You were not kidding about them being reliable.

Yes, its the Carbed version of the engine in mine. In fact the 1FZ was designed by their HINO heavy truck division for use in industrial applications like this...its why its so overbuilt.
